India’s first Leopard Conservation Centre to develop in Uttarkashi forest. Uttarakhand Forest along with United Nations Development Programme will develop the centre and gift Uttarakhand a new tourist spot. The idea behind developing the centre is conservation, restoration and creating livelihood. And the project also intend at conservation of elusive snow leopards and various other endangered Himalayan species.
The state is blessed with handsome number of snow leopard and thus special efforts are being made to preserve and increase the number of snow leopards. There is a need to identify the areas where snow leopards are found and the forest department and cooperation of local people and military forces are identifying the same. The conservation of snow leopard will promote and encourage winter tourism in the state and the mountainous terrains of home of Uttarakhand is home of various wildlife species. Numerous snow leopard have been spotted in Uttarkashi and Pithoragarh districts and based on researches it is said that the state is home to 86 leopards at present.
India’s first Leopard Conservation Centre is not only the only thing, the state is also in the process of developing six city forests to expand green area in urban regions. The city forests will be developed in Kumaon region, two in plains and four in hilly districts. The plan is to increase green cover in urban regions and to connect people with greenery and clean environment.
Uttarakhand CM Trivendra Singh Rawat, along with state forest minister and officials had a meeting regarding the conservation centre. The CM said, “The total number of snow leopards should be counted in the state, special efforts should be made to preserve and increase the number of snow leopards. In the last few years, the areas where snow leopards have been seen should be identified by the forest department by the cooperation of local people and military forces. These areas should be calculated by making grids”.
