Bodh Gaya

Bodh Gaya one of the most important pilgrimage sites on the Buddhist map. Located in Gaya, this is the place where Buddha attained enlightenment under a huge Bodhi tree. The Mahabodhi Temple houses the Bodhi Tree, the Diamond Throne, an 80 foot Buddha statue, the Mahabodhi statue, a meditation garden, a lotus pond, a meditation garden, Chinese, Japanese, Bhutanese, Taiwanese, Bangladeshi, Thai and Tibetan monasteries. The Mahabodhi temple is also declared as a UNESCO Heritage site. 

Sarnath

Sarnath accommodates the Dhamek Stupa which is 128 feet high and is relics of ancient stupas. One of the sacred sites, Buddha delivered his first sermon and taught the Dhamma and formed the Sangha. The remains of the Ashoka pillar are also found here, the lion capital-the the National Emblem of India can be seen here. 

Kushinagar

One of the most sacred Buddhist sites, Kushinagar is the place where Buddha attained Parinirvana ie Nirvana after death. The place where Buddha breathed his last breathe, the Parinirvana Stupa has a reclining statue of Lord Buddha which depicts ‘dying Buddha’. The site is famous amongst monks, Buddhist devotees, and followers. Ramabhar Stupa is the cremation site of Buddha and a giant statue can be seen at Matha Kuar Shrine. 

Rajgir and Nalanda

Considered as one of Lord Buddha’s favourite places, this is the place where he has delivered many important sermons. Many remains narrate various stories of Buddhism. Shanti Stupa in Rajgir is where one can see four Buddha statues: Gridhakuta Hill-here he delivered Lotus sutra, Prajnaparamita, Jivekameavan gardens, and Ajatshatru fort. Whereas in Nalanda, one can come across an important teaching place Nalanda Mahavihara-a main Buddhist streams of thoughts originated here. 

Vaishali

Vaishali is an ancient city where the Ashoka Pillar is strongly standing to date. The remains of a brick stupa near the Ashoka Pillar is the place where Lord Buddha delivered his last sermon before attaining Parinirvana. A pond here contains the ashes of the Buddha.
