Nature & Advanture

Some of the prominent nature parks that you can visit in India are:

CORBETT: India’s first National Park, just a six hour drive from Delhi, is named after the Anglo-Indian hunter of man-eating tigers and leopards, who later became a conservationist. You could take a dawn-to-dusk safari through the dense forest, travelling on the steep slopes, through swift-flowing rivers and the grassy plains that stretch between the Garhwal, Kumaon and Shivalik ranges to see tigers, sambhar deer, langur monkeys, rhesus macaques, peacocks and the 400 species of birds that inhabit the park.

NAGARHOLE: Watered by four rivers this is excellent elephant country, with families of irascible wild pig, water birds nesting noisily in groves of flooded trees, pythons sunning themselves, and leopards loitering at dusk. Just a five hour drive from Bangalore, Nagarhole is also home to the world’s largest bats, the squabbling, furry, fruit-eating flying foxes and dark ebony trees.

PERIYAR WILDLIFE PARK: This sanctuary is by far the best place to view herds of elephants. Cruise 55 sq km of the beautiful lake in this flooded, many-pronged valley while elephant families come down to drink and occasionally, swim across to other islands. This picturesque park is just a five hour drive from Kochi.

BANDIPUR: Part of the lushly-forested Deccan Plateau, Bandipur in Karnataka offers a rich and varied wildlife habitat. Covered with a mix of deciduous forests, evergreen forests and scrub, Bandipur has a fairly open forest area, making it easy to spot wildlife that includes the Asian elephant, gaur, sambar, chital, mouse deer, the 4-horned antelope, wild pig and the Indian porcupine.

KAZIRANGA: A six hour drive from Guwahati in the eastern India state of Assam, Kaziranga is one of the most beautiful reserves in India with a unique mixture of elephant grassland, lush swamps, patches of dense forest and hills looming in the distance. Home to the wild buffalo, great Indian one-horned rhino, hog deer, swamp deer, elephant, tiger and exceedingly rich bird-life, Kaziranga is every naturalist’s delight.

SUNDERBANS: It is in state of West Bengal that the silt-rich River Ganges branches into tributaries, and flows through dense green tidal swamp forests of mangrove. Here, large ‘Royal Bengal’ tigers stalk the forests. Crocodiles lie on the mud banks as do air-breathing mud-skipper and climbing perch fish. And all this is just a five hour journey from Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta).
